Konaar's Biryani - Kodambakkam, Chennai (3/5)

Madurai food is something I am particularly fond of and when I saw this newly opened restaurant near home, could not resist trying it out.

Food (3.5/5)

Interestingly, the restaurant offers around 8 biryani combos, each with a different starter (includes chicken 65, kadai, fish, mutton kola urundai, tandoori chicken, etc).

I ordered a south Indian biryani combo. This comes with a bowl of biryani, raita, brinjal curry, mutton kola urundai (minced mutton fried and served in a ball shape), sweet and a soft drink.

Portions: Initial thoughts on the biryani was the rice quantity was not sufficient; however, as a combo it balances out. With 4 large kola urundai's, anything more would be too much for an average eater.

Taste: found the taste of biryani rice just about average. The raita and brinjal curry did not significantly impress either. That said, the large chunk of meat which was served with the biryani was tender and very well cooked.

On the contrary, the kola urundai was lip smacking. The crust of the urundai crumbles as you bite into it and it is easily among the best I have had. One observation was that it had small bone pieces (not sure if it's intentional or traditionally made so).

Coming to soft drink, I was impressed that they had bovonto as an option and I am sure it have more takers than pepsi.

Ambience: the dining area was clean and well maintained. Seating - though a little cramped, was moderately comfortable.

Cleanliness around the hand wash area needs attention and tissues refills need to be monitored.

Pricing: the combo I had was priced at INR. 260. I would consider it good value for money.

Service: I first wondered why it took them ten minutes to serve a biryani order. However, one bite into the kola urundai and I knew exactly why (hot and freshly made - I am sure they need preparation time for it).

On a summary note, while the biryani was not too impressive, this place serves the best kola urundai's I have tasted. Definitely going back for more of those and probably to try some tiffin and parota combinations.

Courtallam Border Rahmath Kadai, T.Nagar (4/5)

Being a hardcore fan of parota and south Indian chicken preparations, its been a difficult few months to read reviews about this place and not being able to visit them. Finally got a chance to visit them today and pounced on this opportunity.

Food (5/5)
The items I tried were:
1. Naatu kozhi biryani - had the country chicken biryani several times from other prominent food joints in the city, none would come even in a 100 metres distance to the quality of this offering.

Country chicken is known be tougher meat and I was stunned when the bone came clean as I tried to pull the chicken piece from the biryani; this in other words showcases the tenderness of the meat. Wow!

As for flavours, both the biryani rice and chicken piece had good traditional flavours and combined with salna was a delight for spice lovers. You could alternatively pair it with raita or brinjal dalcha if you aren't able to handle the spice levels.

2. Chicken dishes (chops and gun chicken)
Both of these preparations had comparable flavours - well cooked meat (stiff, if you aren't used to country chicken), adequately spiced and combined great with parota and briyani.

Salna - served pipping hot, it was comparable to spicy non veg curry (I doubt if they include any meat while preparing it - because it looked like a serve to all dish).

My friends who ordered the veechu parota (stuffed parota) and mutton biryani seemed to enjoy their meal just as much as I did.

Ambience (2.5/5)
Needs improvement.

The dining area in the ground floor feels like a furnace, even-though it seemed partly air-conditioned. The first floor had old air-conditioners but temperature-wise was definitely a relief from the heat outside. The presence of house flies in an air conditioned dining joint is not common and they definitely need to work on the hygiene quotient.

In terms of seating, they have tried to make maximum utilisation of available space, but in the process the space feels feels way too cramped.

Service (3/5)
The food is served quick but the staff's attention to tables need to be better; it would also help them in lowering the dining time per customer group which can fix the crowd management issues they seem to be facing.

Pricing
A meal for four heavy duty consumers cost around INR. 1350. I would consider that reasonable considering the quality of their food.

On a summary note, the place is new and has several areas of improvement when it comes to non food aspects. That said, their food is an absolute delight and there was not one dish that I could find fault with.

P.s - Skewing my rating marginally based on the quality of their food.

Beyond Madras at The Dining Room, Park Hyatt - Velachery, Chennai (4/5)

This review is based on a meal on the house for which I was invited with my family. We were invited to try their South Indian Thali and the moment the PR mentioned that I realised it was my kinda thing. But however, considering a few recent experiences in some other prominent restaurants, I went with no great expectations.

Ambience (4/5)
With a moderately dim yellow lighting, the restaurant has a huge dining area. A part of the dining area (where we sat) had the open kitchen on one side and on the other side was the exit way to the open area facing their much hyped flying elephant outlet.

Despite the busy preparation scene at the open kitchen, it was no nuisance to the customers whatsoever - that is commendable.

The other dining area seemed much larger and was located further away from the entrance.

Service (4/5)
The staff were very informed about the dishes and pleasantly obliged to all our requests for refills. The staff also made sure we at least sampled the some of the delicacies that we might have otherwise skipped, for the thali was overwhelming for a dinner.

Refills came quick and also clearing of dishes were spontaneous.

Pricing
Since the meal was on the house, I would prefer not to score them on this factor.

However, their thali is at a slight premium to similar restaurants in a few mid segment 5 star hotels and much economical than the expensive ones.

Welcome drinks (4/5)

There were four options, nannari sherbat, more (buttermilk), rose milk and elumichai sherbet (lemon soda).

Since we were four of us, got one of each to try. All of them were of good standard, while the rose milk stood out for me - might be on account of my inherent liking for the same.

Starters
The starters included paniyarams, sabudana vadas and nethilli fry.

1. The sabudana vada which was less impressive on a standalone basis, tasted good when consumed with the chutney.

2. The paniyarams were good in the first round, but came out excessively oily when we went for a refill.

3. Nethili fry
Was standard. Since my brother (the only other non vegetarian in the team) and myself are not big fans of the same, the restaurant made a good gesture of serving chicken tikka's as substitute.

The tikkas were delectable.

Main course (3.5/5)
The thali was quite overwhelming considering the extensive options it is served with. I had limited appetite for vegetarian items in the thali and my views on the same are based on samples/small portions.

Breads (3/5)

1. Dhaniya dosai - was healthy and crisp. But I rushed through this to the other offerings, which I prefer over dosas.

2. Ragi idiyappam served with coconut milk
On a normal day, I would run away from a ragi idiyappams. But this, was one of their simplest and finest offerings. The coconut milk was perfect with its thickness and sweetness quotients and the ragi idiyappams tasted brilliant when soaked in the same before consumption.

3. Parotas
The parotas combined well the nilagiri chicken and lamb curry. However, it did not live up the flaky description it came with and could have been made better.

Since I love parotas, I had quite a few despite the flaws.

4. Aapam
Fine aapams, but the bread lost its curves before plating. I know that doesn't sound right, but there is no better way to describe it.

Curries (3.5/5)
1. Lamb chettinad - had delectable and soft meat cubes and a fine and thick masala.

2. Nillagiri chicken curry - this was a non spicy gravy and combined well with appam and parotas.

3. Fish curry - reminded me of one at a mess that I love, though a little thicker. Couldn't enjoy much for lack of appetite.

Veg curries:
Most of the veg curries would have best combined with white rice or the coconut rice (which was served later).

Paruppu urundai kozhambu was something I did not enjoy. The urundai was too thick and dry, and the gravy refused to penetrate

Rice item
Coconut rice - with limited or no appetite left, I had to limit my consumption of this simple yet brilliant offering. The only possible reason I could enjoy some of their veg curries was this rice offering.

Dessert (3.5/5)
First look and I thought I should give the desserts a miss; for it had all those items which I usually skip in the desserts. However, tasting them was a decision I would not regret.

1. Vattapalam - classic! This Indian version of caramel custard which is infused with coconut milk is probably the only version of caramel custard I would appreciate.

2. Banana cake
Was passable. Though it did do justice to the banana name in the flavour, its a dessert I would give a miss. The cake was denser than how I expected it to be.

3. Sakkarai pongal
A sweet that I usually avoid for its overdose of sweetness, but enjoyed here. With rich ghee infusion, this had a fine balance of sweetness and was to my preference.

Others in the group did not quite agree with my views on the sakkarai pongal as they believe it needed to be more sweeter.

On a summary note: An expensive, but elaborate thali offering by one of the premium hotels in the city. With several fine dishes and some healthy twists, it manages to stand out from its peers for the unique offering. Check it out!

Maplai, Nungambakkam (4/5)

Background:
I have been to Maplai twice; first was when they had newly opened and the other was a couple of days back - based on a meal organised by the management/zomato.

During my first I had a lunch thali - a chicken meal. It was a point when the restaurant was at the receiving end of criticisms from one and all - a view that I did not agree. Though my experience was nothing out of the world - the restaurant had a few good dishes.

What impressed me more is how the restaurant did a phoenix move and pulled their act together. Despite all criticism they faced during its first few months, they are easily among the better restaurants today in the chosen cuisine.

Ambience (3/5)
Kept simple and elegant - they do justice to the price band they are operating in.

Pricing (4/5)
The restaurant believes in truly feeding its customers and that means 'a lot' of food and a price one would definitely not mind spending.

The sit down menu which consists of a soup, 6 starters, 3 main course, ghee rice, indian breads (parota, naan (soon to be introduced), idiyappam, dosa, etc), desserts is great Vfm

Drinks (3.5/5)
1. Virgin green apple mojito - a drink that I would have never ordered again - if not for maplai renewing my love for it. Unlike other places which get the balance of green apple syrup wrong most times- this was spot on.
2. Ginger berry Margarita - that was no margarita, but the ginger and berry blend was an enjoyable mid-meal drink.
3. Rose milk - a childhood favourite for most TN kids. Unlike the diluted ones you commonly find, their offering was thick and tasted good.

Food (4.5/5)

Starters
While their veg starters were decent, the offering is much more promising for non-vegetarian.

1. Thanjavur kari kari gola
Eaten hot, this mutton kola balls are yummy.

2. Mutton chukka
Did not eat much of the same - but came across as  just ok when compared to other finer offerings in their menu.

3. Nethili fry
A vanilla offering that was fried to perfection. Had the perfect crispy crunchy flavour - cant expect more from this regular fish offering.

4. Cheesy lollypop
In the midst of all the spicy enjoyable food - this was slightly a spoiler for me. Am unsure if this was on account of the spice-joy moment I was having,

5. Kozhi kaal ney roast
Nothing but chicken legs - ghee roast style. My favourite starter for the day.  The mallu in me refused to eat it in without their parota's.

Loved how the parota and this dish combined. A combo that I expect to lure me back to this restaurant.

6. Veg starters: while most of them were decent, what stood out for me was the crispy guntur corn.

Other decent dishes were chepankazhangu roast (only when combined with the chilly mayo dip) and vazhapoo kola urundai.

Main course:
1. As a mallu another dish I has to try and judge was the puttu and kadala curry. The kadala curry was nice and thick - but I am used to having a more diluted version with puttu.
2. Ghee rice with paneer butter masala - I was told this is one of their fastest moving combo and there was no reason it shouldn't be.
3. Varathuariche kozhi - Among my favourite curries when made well, more so when combined with parota. The irresistible consumption of this curry with parotas and ghee dosa left me nearly immobile (was so full after the meal).

Challenge dishes:
- theepori chicken
- theepori paneer
The spiciest dish you would ever come across and a dish that is not for the faint hearted.

Try it only if you can handle spice and this dish is exclusively for challenge; couldn't really appreciate the taste.

Desserts
A mixed bag for me:
✔️ salted caramel akaraivadasai - salted caramel, white chocolate topped rice cake. An infusion that thoroughly impressed me.
✔ ️3 way vattapalam - not a fan of caramel puddings usually - but this was delectable
✔️ jigarthanda - not the best I have tasted, but almost there.
✔️ maplai falooda - having a good rose milk offering can clearly help when making faloodas - a lesson that I learnt by experience at maplai.

❌ gulab jamun cheesecake - a total spoiler. Jamun and cheesecake hardly combined.
❌ mud pie - too gooey for a mud pie.

On a summary note, I loved their food, the drinks and some of their dessert offering. Definitely going back for more.

Om Sai Skanda Dosa Camp, Ulsoor (4.5/5)

Whenever I crossed this place I have wondered what all the crowding was for in front of what looked like any other corner side dosa shop. Zomato ratings and reviews added as an additional motivation to check the place out.

Today, on my way back home I stopped here for a small pre-dinner meal and decided to try the place out.

Service (4.5/5)
Food is ready and served in seconds from the time you order.

Ambience  (3/5)
Despite being a corner shop/fast food joint, they have taken efforts to maintain the cleanliness inside and outside the restaurant. It's no surprise that I found quite a lot of people crowding this joint whenever I passed by.

However, as a fast food diner- there is always the discomfort that one faces, especially considering the customers need to stand in the footpath of a busy main-road as the indulge in these delicacies.

Pricing (5/5)
Extremely cheap. Two masala dosa's, 1 vada and 1 idly cost us INR.90. That is great VFM considering the quality of the food we ordered

Food (4.5/5)
Masala dosa- easily the best masala dosa I have had in recent times. It was very crisp, perfectly dosed with masala and red chutney on the inside and adequately sized (I am literally craving for more as I type this).

Vada - not hot as it was readily available. However; one can just not complain about the crispiness of this offering.

What made it better was the not so sweet sambar (perfect for a Chennai origin foodie) and the not so bad- thick and fresh coconut chutney.

Would be unfair if I rate them anything lower than 4.5 - especially considering how satisfying the experience was.

Definitely going back!!!

Kaayal, Jeevan Bhima Nagar (3/5)

Was craving mallu food and thought I would try this place out. It was around 9PM and this place had not a single customer. Might be the monday night blues.

Ambience (3/5)
The restaurant is located on the second floor of the building and it has no elevator access. Climbing the stairs be a problem if you are taking senior members of the family.

The interiors are simple yet themed in kerala style with a big lamp, chenda (a drum styled instrument) and wall hangings.
Service (3/5)
Considering I was the only customer, the staff were engrossed in their own work. A little more attention to tables could help.

Pricing (3.5/5)
The food is priced quite economically. My meal cost me INR. 185,

Food (2.5/5)
Ordered a chicken roast. couple of parotas and an appam.

- The appam was sub-ordinary and lacked the crispiness.
- The chicken roast smelled a little pungent but the masala tasted decent. The portions were adequate, however the meat was a little stiff.
- Of the two parotas I ordered, the second order (reorder) was served hot and tasted good.

Hotel Crescent, Nungambakkam

After an evening mallu movie with family was looking for some quick food before boarding my night bus back to Bangalore. After eliminating some of the regular south Indian restaurants due to non-availability of seats we decided to dine at Crescent.

Ambience (2/5)
The place is for hardcore non vegetarians and my SIL, who is a vegetarian had trouble dealing with the aromas of non veg food that was floating around. We sat at the non AC dining area- the seats were not too comfortable and the place could use a dullness check.

Pricing (4/5)
The food is priced very economically and I would definitely recommend this place if you are looking for a budget Kerala non vegetarian meal.

Service (3/5)
The staff was initially very cold and did not respond appropriately when we asked regarding availability of the dishes. However, thereafter he was forthcoming in letting us know about the delay in preparation of dishes and otherwise.

The egg curry and parotas were served in no time. However, the chicken roast took around 10-15minutes to be served.

Food (2/5)
We were visiting after 10PM on a Sunday night and there was no fish/prawn dishes available.

1. Classic parotas that was adequately crispy and soft. They were served warmed and was enjoyable.

2. Gravy - the gravy (salna in tamil) that accompanied the parota tasted ok. It had no traces of meat and was served in limited portion – that’s unusual.

3. Egg curry - was basically a few boiled eggs dropped in the curry mentioned above. Was surprised to find a slice of chicken in it (egg-etarians beware)

4. Chicken roast - we had requested for a dry/semi gravy dish. What we were served was a dry flavourless chicken (whatever limited flavour the dish had was limited to the outer layers) that had an overpowering taste of coconut oil. There was very little or no gravy at all, resulting in the lack of flavour.

Overall, a less satisfying experience except for the parotas; definitely expected better from this veteran Kerala restaurant.
